HOW TO PREPARE FOR FCPS PART 1?
Now, let’s come to our main point, how to prepare for FCPS Part 1? Preparing for FCPS is much easy as compared to that how to studied for MBBS Examinations. As FCPS Syllabus covers usually general aspects of the topics what you study in your MBBS Syllabus, so revising these topic is much easy, but remember still you have to study very well in order to pass FCPS 1 and starting your new journey towards medical residency.
Don’t worry your super duper senior surgeons haven’t left you alone without any guidance, how to prepare FCPS Part 1? These guidelines are recommended by seniors to help juniors in passing their FCPS 1 examinations.
FCPS PART 1 GUIDELINE FOR SURGERY AND ALLIED
Lets’ start the preparation guideline from Surgery and Allied (As surgery is my favorite: P)
For surgery and allied, you’ll need following books/material:
- Snell’s Review
- Netters Atlas
- Kaplan Anatomy
- High yield Embryology
- Pathoma, Pathology
- BRS physiology
- First Aid
- Chandkians MCQ books/ Rabia Ali/ SK Notes
- Past papers For FCPS Part 1, Surgery & Allied
PHYSIOLOGY:
Prepare Physiology from BRS Physiology from A to Z with special focus on all tables. Tables are much more important. “Ratt lo tables ko”
An important note here: BRS is one of the best physiology books out there. I have read Kaplan too and trust me BRS has much more to offer for FCPS (FCPS meaning Fellow of college of Physicians and Surgeons) Part 1 Preparation. It covers every aspect of your FCPS Part 1 Preparation. Kaplan is easy to understand but has many things missing which are needed for FCPS Part1 Exams. So I will highly recommend BRS Physiology.
ANATOMY:
Well I know you all must love Anatomy: P It’s such a beautiful pain in the neck from the start of MBBS!! : P
Snell’s Review of Anatomy is more than enough but you must have to supplement it with Netters atlas images. Or else u r not going to understand it. Focus on the images and illustrations from Netters; these will help you a lot in your FCPS Part1 exam. They will help u remember stuff more in this case.
Study Snell, don’t worry about its big size, it looks big as it also contains embryology points and really large multiple images in a single topic, so there is less what’s to be read from Snell.
All the clinical in Snell’s Review is sufficient
PATHOLOGY:
Prepare pathology section of FCPS Part 1 from Pathoma; it is no doubt the best book for clearing your concepts of pathology, ultimately your FCPS Part 1 section of pathology. It will take only few days to study from Pathoma pathology. If you have less time you can also study from First Aid, but I will again recommend Pathoma. Some people say BRS pathology is enough from FCPS Part 1; no its not.
EMBRYOLOGY:
For covering embryology section of FCPS Part 1 study it from high yield embryology. It will take just 2-3 days to do whole of it. It’s very well written and a recommended Book for FCPS Part 1 examination. Don’t skip it at any cost
Learn the Germ Layer Derivatives Very well. They are High yield
NEUROANATOMY:
It is to be done from KAPLAN Neuroanatomy. It will take 4 days to complete.
Pay special attention to chapter 4, 5 and 10. You must cover spinal cord section even if you skip the whole neuro anatomy. Relationships of all CNS ventricles are very important. Don’t forget to do them.
Histology:
Only these topics are enough:
- Epithelia (Must to do)
- Spleen, Lymph node, Thymus (There is a single chapter in Kaplan for these)
- Types of collagen and cartilage
BIOCHEMISTRY:
Do it from First aid and just cover the following topics precisely:
- Vitamins
- Names of Autosomal dominant and recessive diseases
- And Prepare biochemistry MCQs from Rabia Ali to cover the rest of things
FIRST AID:
Briefly prepare all the systems, pharmacology, general pathology, microbiology, immunology, and bio statistics from it
Skip the psychiatry portion and biochemistry portion from first aid except for the above mentioned topics.
MCQ BOOKS:
Usually there are a large number of fcps books available for FCPS Part 1 Examination that often candidates get confused. So you should study only these books (Not all of them)
Prefer them in descending order
- Rabia Ali
- Asim shoaib
- SK peals
- Chandkian
